Okay, Tim, where are you taking me?
Waiting for our shuttle driver who never came, a driver approached us and said, “I’ll take you to Flores.” We weren’t quite sure we should go, but then he said “Tim, only a 10-minute ride” after he jokingly said it would take 3 hours.
We abruptly stopped at the water’s edge and he said, “This is where you transfer.” So okay, Tim, we jumped into a sleek wooden motor boat and sped across the lake. Not bad. A cool breeze on a 93 degree day, and then onto the beautiful shoreline with colorful hotels.
But, oh no, that was not our destination. Luggage then moved into a dust-covered Suzuki along with our captain and his co-pilot. “No problem,” he said as we squeezed through cement and clay walls that had millimeters of space to spare. Forgetting to mention straight uphill on rocky washed out paths on the mountainside. Not your typical advertised shuttle ride, but a whipping well-maneuvered jaunt for the Jeep-like vehicle.
Zapote Treetop Inn is where we stopped as our captain became our resort manager, cook, and bartender. After we got over the shock, we walked immediately down the rocky path to the shore and jumped in the refreshing lake. We would later discover the inn is a garden paradise that we would never want to leave.
